Noss Mayo has an age-old history dating as far back as 1287 when King Edward I gave Mathew Fitzjohn the manor of ‘Stok’ and the village became known as Noss Mayo; ‘Mathew’s Nose.’ The village was initially used for fishing as a sideline for farmers, using charming Cellar Beach as a store for fishing equipment and fish hauls. Considerable changes came to Noss Mayo in the form of Membland estate owner Edward Baring; the 1st Lord Revelstoke. Over the course of just 18 years, many farm buildings and new homes were built by Baring in a distinctive, romantic 1880’s style that can still be seen around Noss Mayo to this day.
