What is a casement window?

The mechanism of a casement window is simple. Typically side-hinged, casement windows open outwards with an easy turn of the handle. However, casement windows can also be bottom and top-hung. Top hung windows are especially useful in wet weather climates as it prevents rain from seeping through into the home. The low-maintenance casement windows offer great levels of ventilation as well, thanks to their opening capabilities and typical side-hinged position. They are able to open in the middle because of the hinges, meaning that you are able to obtain complete views through each window.

What are the benefits of casement windows?

Casement windows are one of the most popular window styles throughout the UK for good reason. There are a whole host of benefits when it comes to choosing this type of window. Here is a list of some of those advantages:

  • Energy efficiency - casement windows are one of the most energy-efficient styles available, thanks chiefly to their design. The strong seals on each side of the frame help the sash to press against the frame in a secure way. Therefore, as a result of the seals being tightened, there is less chance of any air getting through.
  • Versatility - Various casement windows can be stacked alongside each other to form alternative styles such as bay and bow windows. This allows you to choose a design that suitably complements your home. Bay windows protrude out from the building, giving the illusion of a larger room as well as providing more natural light. For something a bit different how about bow windows? They are similar to bay windows but have a curved shape. They are useful if you would like a corner window; allowing to you have views out of multiple sides of your home.
  • Potential for stunning aesthetics - In some cases, they do actually give you some more interior space as well as beautiful panoramic views, perfect for those with gardens they like to admire. They instantly add a sense of elegance to any home and are perfect for living rooms as they are a natural focal point.
  • Security - with casement windows, the hardware is securely concealed within the frame, making them all the more difficult to break into. In terms of the hardware itself, the fact that it is within the frame means that the aesthetics are enhanced.
