What can affect the cost of a composite door?

In recent years composite doors have really taken off in popularity, not least because they’re strong, durable, have excellent security features and look great too. However, compared to uPVC doors they’re not particularly cheap and given that price is often a big factor in choosing a new front door, it’s important to understand the factors that impact on cost.

A composite door often has the appearance of a traditional timber front door, but is made from a blend of materials, including wood, uPVC, and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP). The quality of these components significantly affects the overall price.

The door’s core material can determine price, depending on its strength and insulation properties. Cheaper composite doors can certainly be found, but be wary – these might not perform anywhere near as well as better-designed alternatives.

Talking of design, doors styles can also influence price. You might want a certain number of panels, glass inserts or decorative features such as raised mouldings. Glass definitely influences price because there a lot of options. Frosted, stained, or decorative glass adds elegance but comes with an additional cost.

Then there is the hardware factor. Locks, handles, letterplates all add to the overall look of your new composite front door, but premium finishes can increase price, as can security options including multi-point locking systems and reinforced frames.

What are the benefits of composite doors?

Here at Landmark Window Systems we want our customers to have the best composite doors on the market at prices which are reasonable and affordable. This is one of the reasons we are proud to stock Solidor composite doors. These have a solid timber core and are 10% thicker than most other doors.

Other advantages Solidor composites have over inferior products include:

  • Energy efficiency. Solidor composite doors have a U Value of 1.4 W/m2k, which helps to reduce energy bills and insulate your home. They can help with noise reduction when combined with acoustic glazing and are easy to maintain.
  • Highly secure. These doors are very tough to penetrate, thanks to their unique Avantis lock which carries the industry’s largest dead bolt. They pass all security checks, including the police-backed Secured by Design and PAS24, with flying colours so are the best choice where safety and security are concerned.
  • Great design options. We offer a wide range of colour combinations – everything from traditional Chartwell Green to eye-catching Rich Aubergine, along with lifelike woodgrain finishes. We also have an impressive range of glazing and hardware options available to suit your own personal taste.
  • Easy to maintain. As the outer coating is made of a highly durable plastic edge banding and two thermo plastic door skins, only an occasional wipe down is required to maintain their high-quality appearance. They are expected to last upwards of 25 years, so are a worthwhile investment.
